Product FAQ

Do we cover towing costs as a result of mechanical breakdown?

We cover towing costs following accidental damage to the vehicle. Clients should take out Roadside Assistance with an alternative provider where cover will be provided for towing in the event of mechanical breakdown.

Do we cover heavy commercial trailers on a stand-alone basis?

Our policy conditions require at least one medium commercial vehicle (truck in excess of 3,500kg GVM) or one heavy commercial vehicle (truck in excess of 7,500kg GVM) to be on the policy before we can place a trailer on risk.

Do we cover light delivery vehicles (bakkies) or private motor vehicles on a stand-alone basis?

We do provide cover for these vehicle types only if the business insured is a driving school. Our Group Motorsure policy accommodates both LDVs and PMVs on the transport policy but trucks need to remain the main component of this policy.

Do we have a product for car/truck hire?

Included in our policy wording, is car hire to a maximum value of R250 per day for 21 days. This is available for private motor vehicles only and only in event of theft, hijack or write-off of the vehicle.

Must radios be specified separately or included in the value of the vehicle?

We suggest the radio be specified on the policy as the excess applicable is a lot lower than if it were to form part of the overall vehicle sum insured. If the radio is not specified, then we apply the basic excess of the vehicle. The radio claim will invariably fall within this excess.

What cover is provided for towing fees and wreckage removal?

Our policy provides for the following:
Towing costs: 5.0% of vehicle sum insured
Wreckage removal: 2.5% of vehicle sum insured

Do we cover foreign drivers and if so, do we charge an additional excess?

Our policy caters for foreign drivers as long as they have the relevant licenses which are equivalent to a South African PrDP. They are also required to be in possession of a defensive driving permit. There is no additional excess should a foreign driver be involved in an accident.

Is SASRIA compulsory?

Yes, SASRIA is compulsory on all Wheels policies. We have a blanket policy with SASRIA which requires us to pay SASRIA on each and every policy.

Premium on SASRIA for motor vehicles as follows:

PMV R2.00 per vehicle
LDV R4.50 per vehicle
HCV R4.50 per vehicle
Trailers R4.50 per vehicle
Buses 0.04% of Sum Insured
Motorcycles R2.00 per bike
Classic Cars R2.00 per vehicle

Do we insure our vehicles for market, retail or agreed value?

Our policy pays out on the following values for the following class of vehicle/bike:

  • HCV: Reasonable market value/agreed value
  • PMV/LDV: Reasonable retail value/agreed value
  • Motorcycles: Reasonable retail value
  • Classic Cars/Bikes: Agreed value basis (subject to inspection)

We determine our values from the Mead & McGrouther (Trans Union) motor vehicle and bike guide. It is vitally important we be notified should the vehicle/bike be fitted with extras that may vary these values.

What does it mean to be insured on an agreed value basis and how do we calculate the agreed value?

To insure vehicles on an agreed value basis means that both parties (client and insurer) agree to insure the vehicle at a value that falls outside the standard policy conditions. We will agree on a value no more than the current market value plus 10% plus extras.

Do we insure sports cars on our Classic and Sports product?

Yes, we cover sports cars that are pre 1989 models. Cover is not provided for the latest sports and exotic cars on this policy.

Can the insured buy back the third party excess on heavy commercial vehicles that are covered for third party only?

Whilst we offer third party excess reducer under our Wheelscap policy, we do not buy back the excess applicable on policies where cover is limited to third party only.

Do we insure foreign registered vehicles comprehensively in South Africa?
